The ALMR Communications System is a digital, trunked WAN system shared between the DOD, FEA (excluding DOD), State of Alaska, and local government.  The communications transport network, supporting sites, and site support equipment are components of the System.  The fundamental objective is to provide reliable and secure interoperable communications for first responders especially during emergencies, critical situations, and multiple agency responses.  The System is a MotorolaTM ASTRO 25© Digital Trunking WAN SmartZone© solution that consists of the System infrastructure and multiple subsystems.  It was designed to provide 95% mobile coverage at the sites along the major roadway system, and portions of Kodiak and the Southeast.

ALMR was originally designed at 105 sites; this included a combination of 90 Department of Defense (DOD) and State of Alaska (SOA) sites, and an additional 15 Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) sites.  One 800MHz site was added, as well as the two transportable communications systems, bringing the total number of operational sites to 108 at final build out, if realized.
